I think for guys, the picture is the first thing we look at. Like it or not, we all have our own "formula" for what is attractive and you'll be able to tell if you're attracted almost immediately. If you put up a picture that's recent, well focused and puts you in the best light possible, it will show and attract more attention. Some people have professional headshots done (Glamour Shots at the mall is pretty reasonable) and will get you far more interest than a shot taken with your cell phone. Let's face it, on a dating site, you're looking for chemistry and the visual impact makes the quickest impression. Once we click on a profile, then most of us will get an impression by your goals, interests, and how you write about yourself. If the profile is written in ALL CAPS, that sends a signal that you're shouting at us and are demanding attention. It's usually a turn off. Poor spelling and grammar is also a turn off..it's amazing how many people overlook this.

I think you’re right on your analysis of the data—it does make us look superficial. Though, I think it just shows that our culture is very visual and that online dating and the social networking landscape just amplify that natural inclination. I also would be interested to see if Match.com has data about how men and women answer this question differently, if they do at all.
